Safety

⚠️ Butane is highly flammable and forms explosive mixtures with air — work well away from any open flames or hot surfaces, and ensure the lab is well ventilated. Collect the gas over water using inverted measuring cylinders; do not allow gas to accumulate in confined spaces. The lighter or canister used as the butane source is pressurised; do not puncture or heat. Wear safety goggles. Vent the collected butane to atmosphere outside the building once the measurements are complete (never down the sink or via the fume cupboard if the building has gas-flame burners running).
